Woman Hit by New York City Cyclist Suffers Severe Brain Injury

|

A woman hit by a New York City bicyclist is in the hospital, recovering from a traumatic brain injury. It is being reported that that the 67-year-old woman, whose name is Donna, was struck by the cyclist after he ran a red light on 57th Street in Midtown, around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24th. She had reportedly just gotten lunch and was making her way through the intersection on Fifth and Sixth avenues when the bike collided with her.

A bystander, Kenny Tello, told CBS2 that, “I heard the ambulance. I came downstairs and when I came to the front door, I saw somebody laying on the floor.”

The incident has drawn attention to the sometimes reckless behavior of cyclists in the City. Many who work in Midtown have stated that the actions of the cyclist involved in this incident are similar to ones they see every day. Some have even stated bikes cruise through the intersection where the accident took place on a regular basis. “They’re always going through the red lights in this intersection right here,” stated Kenny Tello. Another witness, Jimmy Gomez, added that, “Bicyclists, they don’t stop. If they don’t have to, they’ll go right through when the light is red. It’s a dangerous intersection.”

The cyclist involved in Wednesday’s incident remained on the scene following the crash, where he was eventually issued a summons carrying a fine up to $250 or community service. In the wake of the accident, the NYPD is reportedly already doing more to crack down on dangerous bike-riding, writing even more summonses for Manhattan cyclists on Thursday. According to Donna’s husband, she is in serious-but-stable condition following surgery.

Donna’s employer, located nearby where the incident took place in Midtown, released a statement reading: “All of us who live or work in New York City do so at our peril because of bike riders speeding through intersections and often going against traffic on one-way streets. Bicycles should have a license plate to create accountability for the riders. We pray that Donna will fully recover from this tragedy.”
