Recently, there have been a slew of deadly pedestrian accidents in New York. According to CBS News New York, over the course of a few days fatal traffic accidents involving vehicles hitting pedestrians happened one after another. One of the deadly pedestrian crashes involved a 16-year-old girl who was hit by a box truck as she was crossing the street on her way to school. The truck driver who hit her was charged with failure to use due care and failure to yield.
Another of the fatal pedestrian wrecks occurred in the East Village and involved a drunk driver hitting and killing a 21-year-old NYU student as he was crossing the street. The driver was charged with driving while ability impaired and driving while intoxicated (DWI).
All these deadly pedestrian accidents happened in the aftermath of Mayor Eric Adams raising concerns about, and pushing for safety improvements regarding, traffic safety in New York City.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
Mayor Adams is correct that traffic safety improvements are necessary. Even one deadly pedestrian accident is too many. For there to have been so many in just a few days is completely unacceptable. Unfortunately, traffic safety improvements in NYC are probably not coming anytime soon. However, there are steps that pedestrians can take to stay safe while walking in and around New York City, including:
- Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible
- If possible, cross the streets at intersections and crosswalks
- Obey pedestrian traffic signs (Walk/Don’t Walk)
- Try to avoid crossing the street in areas that aren’t well lit
- Look both ways before crossing the street
- When crossing the street, look out for vehicles turning and make sure the driver sees you
- Avoid distractions while crossing the street, such as talking on the phone, texting, or listening to music via headphones
