Buses Collide in Lincoln Tunnel

On Monday, September 26th, at least 44 passengers were injured when two New Jersey Transit buses crashed into each other inside the Lincoln Tunnel.

Port authorities said the two NJ Transit buses collided when the 127 line rear-ended a bus on the 128 line in the center lane of the tube just before 9 AM. Both buses were occupied with morning commuters.

Fortunately, no injuries were considered life-threatening. ABC 7 News reported that the most significant injuries were a broken arm and a broken jaw. One of the passengers had a pre-existing brain injury, which resulted in a seizure. Ten passengers who were treated at the scene were transported to St. Luke’s Medical Center, Weill Cornell, Bellevue Hospital, and Hoboken University Medical Center.

Authorities stated the driver in the first bus (128) was issued three tickets for improper lane change, unsafe lane change, and reckless driving. While shifting lanes inside the Lincoln Tunnel is strictly prohibited, this maneuver was the cause of the collision.

In New Jersey, NJ Transit drivers are required to perform a physical exam every two years to demonstrate their ability to operate a large vehicle in a safe manner. Despite having an excellent record, bus drivers typically make errors because of exhaustion, distractions, medical issues, or simply a bad decision that places the health and safety of the passengers at risk.

Should I Seek Legal Representation after a Bus Accident?

When a bus accident happens in New York, an attorney can conduct an investigation by inspecting the scene, thoroughly reviewing the crash report, collecting public surveillance videos, and looking into a variety of records corresponding to the driver’s history. By gathering crucial evidence, a lawyer can develop a strong and relentless case strategy to maximize a crash victim’s compensation and incite changes to ensure that similar accident and injuries do not occur in the future.
