Massive Philadelphia Train Derailment Leaves Several dead, 200+ Wounded

The black box has been recovered from the Amtrak train which derailed Tuesday night in Philadelphia that killed at least six people and injured over 200 others.

The train was bound for New York and jumped the tracks around 9:30 pm Tuesday night, leaving most of the 238 passengers hurt and the cars crushed. “It is an absolute disastrous mess,” remarked Philadelphia mayor Michael A. Nutter. “Never seen anything like this in my life.”

Herbert Cushing, the chief medical officer at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia where 54 patients from the wreck were admitted, reported that most of the patients suffered fractures from being tossed around the train. Eight people remain in critical condition and others are still in the hospital. Cushing noted, “There were lots of people from all around the world” who were harmed—including some from Albania, India, and Spain.

The engine which was pulling the train broke off from the passenger cars and went rumbling through a patch of dirt before coming to a stop diagonally across other sets of tracks. Emergency workers moved hurriedly to help passengers get of the train and on Wednesday, a large crane began trying to lift the damaged cars.

The crash is one of the most horrific in recent memory. Philadelphia fire commissioner, Derrick J.V. Sawyer said of the overturned cars, “They’re in horrible shape. There’s a bunch of debris down there, sharp objects. It’s a dangerous situation for responders, even more dangerous for the riders out there.”

The cause of the accident is still unknown and the wreck cut off the Northeast Corridor train line, one of the nation’s busiest routes.
